JAZZPAR Artists - The Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra 1999

The Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra (previously called The Danish Radio Big Band) participated in the JAZZPAR Events of 1990, 1995, 1997 and 1999.

With Prize Winner 1999, Martial Solal: One of the greatest and most experienced big bands of today, the orchestra is a substantially rejuvenated ensemble compared to The Danish Radio Big Band, as it was called in 1990, the very first JAZZPAR year. The young and ambitious personnel of the 1999 edition of the band identifyed itself with creative music of today and were highly motivated to meet the challenges of contemporary composers. In addition to their solo powers the members are some of our most accomplished ensemble players. They had their hands full when Solal arrived with original compositions, some of them written for this occasion and performed in public for the first time at The JAZZPAR Concerts.
Jim McNeely, DRJOs chief conductor toured with JAZZPAR in this capacity thus enabling Solal to concentrate on the demanding piano parts. McNeely, also music teacher as well as a pianist and composer, has gained experience from many sources. He has worked with Chet Baker, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orch., Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Joe Henderson and many others, and he has recorded several albums as a leader.
