JAZZPAR Artists - Martin France

Martin France (UK), b. 1964, participated in Django Bates' Human Chain Plus and Delightful Precipice at the JAZZPAR 97 Event.

Both of Martin's parents were amateur musicians. Martin began performing in public at the age of 12, e.g. as a member of organ trios backing singers. By the mid-80s he was in great demand on the jazz scene of the British capital. Since Loose Tubes he has been closely associated with Django Bates and his subsequent groups. Martin France has performed in over 40 countries with a wide variety of the finest American, European and African musicians. He has conducted drum clinics in Britain and abroad. The release Home Truths with saxophonist Julian Argüelles (brother of Steve) was voted Best Jazz Album of the Year by the two leading English newspapers: The Guardian and The Observer. Really a European heavyweight in his own right, unlike many colleagues having an inclination towards rhythmic subtlety and kind of equilibrium, of static complexity rather than the tense and propelling drive of the US jazz tradition.
