JAZZPAR Artists - Billy Drummond

Billy Drummond (US), b. 1959, was part of Prize Winner Chris Potter's JAZZPAR 2000 Septet.

Drummond love affair with jazz began through the record collection of his father, who was also a drummer. Billy went to college and obtained a degree in Music Performance. Arriving in New York in 1988 he soon joined and toured with Horace Silver's Sextet. Since then great jazz artists like Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson and James Moody have called upon Billy Drummond. He has also recorded three CDs, which reveal his imaginative and capable leadership. "Dubai", which has Chris Potter as one of the group's two reed-players, is top ranked by reviewers.
Drummond does not settle on one rhythmic pattern for long. He suggests fresh ideas and keeps a loose, open feel. An energetic, propulsive and effective player he may fill up gaps without bombast or paint impressionistic colors on the cymbals. Drummond has the classic recordings of Elvin Jones, Max Roach and Art Blakey in his veins along with an adventurous approach, taste and empathy. He plays with conviction and strength and is able to tailor his dynamics to the moods of the moment.
